There are two ways of getting textures of objects for 3D studio Max.
Texture image from voxels - Achieved within Meshlab, pretty straightforward, and produces passable results: http://vimeo.com/14894509

for the projection mapping in 3ds i cant find the 'get all materials from scene' function as seen in your video tutorial?
